Peter Max Highlights His Journey As a Pop Artist
The pop-art movement took birth sometime during the 1950s, in the streets of the UK and the US. It then went on to gain exceptional momentum throughout the sixties. Peter Max became a part of this domain of art in its early stages itself, when the popularity of pop art was steadily climbing the charts. While he began his pop art journey in the 1960s, by the 70s he went on to create a host of artworks and posters that were featured in an exhibition hosted at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum. This whole exhibition was dedicated to him and his works. He was further commissioned by the United States Postal Service to design and create ten-cent stamps which were to be used for commemorating the Expo ’74 World’s Fair that was held in Spokane, Washington. Max chose to create an incredibly vibrant and colorful psychedelic scene featuring an enthralling backdrop of clouds, sun rays and a ship for this stamp. A few years later he started his Statue of Liberty series, which gained a high level of popularity.
Over multiple decades, Peter Max had been the official artist for several popular and important US events. These events even include the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Grammy Awards, the Super Bowl, as well as the 1994 World Cup. He also was the official artist of the “Subway Series” that was conducted as a part of the 2000 World Series. This popular event was held between the New York Mets and the New York Yankees.
In his long career span, Peter Max has created numerous attractive, intriguing and unique art pieces. Many of his artwork was traditionally associated with psychedelic movements, while some of them had the undertones of the counter-culture, neo-expressionism movement. This was a popular movement that took place in the sphere of graphic designing sometime during the late 1960s. The artworks created by Max are typically characterized by the vibrant bursts of colors that the feature. A number of his works tend to feature the majority, or even all of the colors found in the visible spectrum. In addition to paintings and prints, he has also been associated with sculpting, as well as video and digital imagery.
